Tarxien Rainbows returned to winning ways after three winless matches when they defeated Balzan 3-1 to join Vittoriosa Stars and Naxxar Lions in sixth place with seven points.

The Rainbows deserved the three points but they had to wait till the 90th minute to make sure of their win.

On the other hand Balzan are on a four game streak without a win and they still lie in ninth place with four points.

Balzan had Fabio Vignaroli, Rodrigo Pereira and Ryan Darmanin returning in the starting eleven while they lacked Firaz Aboulezz after being handed a two match ban and Luke Sciberras while Aaron Agius was on the bench.

Tarxien had Andrew Agius and Everton Souza Santos returning while Manuel Caruana and Jorge Santos Silva were missing.

The match in the first half was mainly played in the midfield with both teams focusing their play in that sector.

The first real action of note came on the 22nd minute when Negrin passed to Ryan Darmanin but after anticipating his opponent he shot off target. Balzan had another opportunity on the 34th minute but Calabretta fired over the bar.

Tarxien took the lead on the 39th minute when Steve Bezzina played the ball with his hands after a cross by Everton Souza Santos and from close range, referee Mario Apap ordered a penalty. Ronallie Caiheira Seara converted from the spot with a powerful shot on his right side.

Tarxien doubled their lead in their first attack towards goal when on the 55th minute a shot from Carlo Mamo was blocked by Justin Grioli but a wonderful first time shot by the same Mamo gave Martinez no chance.

Balzan reduced the margin on the 61st minute when from a free-kick by Vignaroli, a shot from substitute Lydon Micallef was saved partially by Vella and from the rebound Luis Armaro Negrin made no mistake.

On the 77th minute a free-kick by Everton Souza Santos was well saved by Martinez. Tarxien sealed the three points on the 90th minute when a good personal and persistent action from Ronallie Caiheira Seara finished with a great shot to score his sixth goal of the season and seal the deal.
