Nanotechnology starting in Malta

Malta Independent Wednesday, 9 October 2013, 16:38 Last update: about 13 years ago

A newly formed company Nanotech Development Ltd is to develop various activities in the field of nanotechnologies and carbon nanotubes.

Nanotech Development Ltd is aiming for the production of high quality single wall and multi-wall carbon nanotubes.

Carbon nanotubes are derived from carbon. They are hexagonally shaped tubes, which are composed of carbon atoms built at the nano-scale, which have exceptional properties. What is exciting about this new innovation is that they are around 200 times stronger than steel yet one-sixth of the weight.

CNT can be used in various fields of activities and industries, it will radically improve the performance of tiny sensors, electronics, optical devices, catalysts, batteries, fuel cell, hydrogen storage, carbon nanotubes can be used also in polymers to increase strength, paints, textiles and as a reinforcing agent in cement and other materials.

Nanotech Development Ltd obtained approvals and will be based at the Malta Entreprise Cordine Industrial Estate in Paola.

Production of carbon nanotubes is expected to start in December and the aim of the company is to provide high quality nanotubes at affordable prices. The company also aims to develop finished products in collaboration with local industries.
