The University of Malta in collaboration with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Malta and EY (Ernst & Young) is holding a Public Lecture by Professor Jan Peter Balkenende, Professor of Governance, Institutions and Internationalisation at Erasmus University, Rotterdam, Partner EY and former Prime Minister of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Professor Balkenende is also the recipient of five honorary doctorates. The public lecture, A Sustainable Future for Europe, will be held at the Aula Magna, University of Malta Valletta Campus, St Paul Street, Valletta on Wednesday, 23rd October 2013 at 18:30.
Prof. Balkenende served on the staff of the policy institute of the Christian Democratic Alliance (CDA) until the late 1990s. He became a member of the House of Representatives of the States General for the CDA, financial spokesperson for the CDA parliamentary party, and leader of the parliamentary party in 2001.
In 2002, Professor Balkenende was elected Prime Minister and Minister of General Affairs in the first of four administrations bearing his name. Under his leadership, many reforms in the fields of social security, pre-pension facilities, public health, deregulation etc. were carried through. He played a very active international role in Europe, the G20 and the UN, particularly on issues such as sustainable development, Millennium Development Goals and the WTO.
In his present post at EY, he is responsible for international affairs, corporate responsibility and advisory activities on public-private issues.
