Flipboard: Your personal magazine

Malta Independent Monday, 18 November 2013, 15:32 Last update: about 13 years ago

Flipboard, the world’s first personal magazine, presenting great content to new audiences every day, is among the apps yet to gain popularity in Malta.

The app, available both for android and at the App Store, brings you content you care about by connecting to social networks and getting what your friends are sharing.

Articles, images, photo albums and videos are available for you to view at your comfort on your hand held devices.

Founded in 2009 by Mike McCue and Evan Doll, Flipboard was launched as the world’s first social magazine on Apple’s iPad in July 2010. In December that year Flipboard came to the iPhone then a few months later it launched on Samsung’s S III and Android phones worldwide. Today the company has 83 employees and is headquartered in Palo Alto, California with offices in New York and Beijing, China.

Flipboard Inc. recently added $50 million in capital to accelerate the company’s vision of improving the discovery, curation and creation of great content that moves the world forward.

Growing by more than 50 per cent over the past six months, Flipboard now has over 85 million readers around the world.

People use Flipboard to stay informed and connected to the things they care about, flipping through more than 7 billion pages every month, as well as collecting favourite content into their own magazines on Flipboard.

With over 3 million unique magazines available, readers can find user created magazines on just about any topic – from technology, gossip and style in features varying from Arts and Culture to Food and Dining, Technology and Science, and Travel – there’s something for everyone.

The big names in newspapers and magazines including The New York Times, the guardian, The Telegraph, Forbes, Vanity Fair, bon appétit and Oprah are on Flipboard, as well as your own gossip magazine personalised from the lives of your friends.

“Flipboard is on a quest to transform how people discover, view and share content by combining the beauty and ease of print with the power of social media,” it explains.

Among those utilizing this new resource are such big names as Target, Samsung, and Lexis. Users tend to subscribe to the sponsored pages they “flip” to at a rate of 10%. Consequently, brands do well on Flipboard because they manage to do something that gets users interested enough that they subscribe to them.

It may sound a bit like Pinterest… but not quite.

Over the last couple of years, Pinterest has gained popularity by taking the blogging and search worlds on to the next level. Yet Flipboard started by collating people’s personal social feeds into a super enjoyable digital layout bringing you magazines and newspapers at any moment.
