Arsenal advance to FA Cup quarterfinals

Malta Independent Sunday, 16 February 2014, 19:04 Last update: about 11 years ago

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored a goal and set up another as Arsenal defeated Liverpool 2-1 to advance to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup on Sunday.

After being humbled 5-1 at Anfield in the Premier League last weekend, the Gunners put on a more consistent display and will next face Everton, which beat Swansea 3-1.

Arsene Wenger's team opened the scoring against the run of play in the 16th minute, as Yaya Sanogo saw his shot blocked by Steven Gerrard. But the ball rebounded for Oxlade-Chamberlain, who slotted home from close range past Brad Jones.

Arsenal doubled its lead on a quick counterattack concluded by Lukas Podolski, who scored with a clean finish from Oxlade-Chamberlain's cut back.

Steven Gerrard pulled one back from the penalty spot.
