Below is a minute-by-minute account of today's court proceedings.
1:20pm The case will continue tomorrow at 10:45am.
1:16pm Tanti's lawyer has requested that his client's medical records detailing the treatment given to him be presented tomorrow.
1:11pm The Sergeant, who was the last witness of the day, said that he has come across failed suicide attempts during his five years on the force.
1:04pm Tanti told the Sergeant that he tried to find another spot where he could end his life but did not manage because he was unable to walk. He then saw some people in the vicinity and asked for their help.
1:03pm During a conversation with the same Sergeant in the ambulance, Tanti explained how they had made their way to Dingli cliffs with his car. Tanti told the PC that they both consumer 42 aspirin pills each.
Tanti told the Sergeant that they swallowed the pills because they were fed-up with life. He told the Sargeant that “Lisa was determined to jump, but I was not so sure.”
He then explained that once he saw Zahra jump, he closed his eyes and jumped as well.
Tanti said that on surviving the fall, he tried to get up but was in too much pain.
The Sergeant noted that Tanti was very "tranquil" when recounting the story.
12:56pm The Sergeant said that he asked Tanti some basic questions once he got to him, in order to establish whether the other missing person, Lisa Zahra, was with him.
12:52pm The Police are now recounting the moment they came across Tanti at the foot of Dingli cliffs. Sergeant Konrad Debattista said that Tanti was a “considerable distance” away from the cliff’s edge from where he was viewing him.
The Sergeant said that Tanti did not appear to be in pain, but given the distance he could not see very well.
12:41pm Tony Zahra, the victim's father, told the family to keep an eye on his daughter on the day of their disappearance, after he found out that Tanti had spent the night with his daughter.
Zahra was away on business on the night that Tanti slept over.
12:37pm The Zahra told the Police that they were aware of Lisa Maria's self-harm problems.
12:32pm A negative pregnancy test was found in Zahra’s room during a Police search. Traces of blood were found also found, which is believed to have come from self-inflicted injuries by Zahra.
12:23pm During a drama lesson with Form One students a few weeks before the tragedy, Tanti made his students undergo a role playing exercise whereby they all chose different names for themselves.
Tanti chose the name "Cliff Dingli." When Police asked Tanti whether he chose this particular name for a reason, he did not answer.
12:20pm Tanti’s lawyer is asking if the Police came across a Teddy bear in Zahra’s room with blades stuffed in its stomach. Inspector Arnaud said that he did not come across the Teddy bear himself, but had had heard about it.
12:11pm Tanti sent a written note to Zahra on Valentine’s Day saying how hard it is to find a purpose in life calling it a “purposeless endeavour.”
A separate note sent by Tanti, a teacher, to his student, said that “exams mean s**t but good luck anyway.
Police asked Tanti why he did not take the responsible steps as a teacher and refer his student to medical professionals for help. Tanti told the Police that it had not occurred to him to do so.
12:06pm Questioned by Zahra’s lawyer, Inspector Arnaud said that the five hours worth of messages exchanged between Tanti and Zahra leading up to the tragedy mainly involved Tanti telling Zahra what had to be done and how to go about it.
11:57am Inspector Arnaud admits to Tanti's lawyer that the normal formalities when talking to a suspect were not abided by.
Inspector Arnaud said that talking to Tanti when he was in ITU was "a matter of urgency," and he was not suspected of anything at that point in time.
Tanti was not read his rights, and Inspector Arnaud said that they stopped talking to Tanti as soon as they realised he might incriminate himself.
11:54am Inspector Arnaud said that some of the postings on the Tumblr site ‘Omens of darkness.’
Lawyer Sciriha is asking if he was cognisant that the victim’s user name on the site was ‘redrum.’
11:51am The Police instructed a court appointed expert to look into all data involving “suicides, death and any related subject.”
The Police seized Zahra’s mobile phone and desktop computer, and Tanti’s mobile and laptop.
11:44am The lawyer, Michael Sciriha, is asking who gave the go-ahead to the Police to speak to a patient with broken ribs being administered with morphine.
11:41am Tanti’s lawyer is asking whether the Police checked all the websites visited by the two on their respective computers.
He is also asking who passed on the information to the Police about the contents of Tanti's Facebook page.
He asked if the Police came across a Tumblr page called 'Omens of darkness.' Inspector Briffa said she had not come across that site.
11:37am The Police initially tried to locate the two missing persons by trying to localise the location of their two mobile phones.
11:26am Tanti's mother had flagged her son's behaviour.
According to Tanti's mother, her son sent a message to her the day after the incident saying that he was not feeling well and was afraid that he was going to hurt himself.
11:23am Tanti had told his mother that he was going out with a girl called Lisa, but he did not admit to his mother that the girl was a minor.
11:16am When the two were first reported missing, the Police immediately checked with all the airlines and ferry operator to see whether they had absconded.
11:14am A note left by Tanti was found in his Valletta home. The note simply read: 'Dear mum, this has nothing to do with you, you always were and always have been.'
11:10am Inspector Sylvana Briffa is explaining how the relationship between Erin Tanti and his 15-year-old student Lisa Maria Zahra was first discovered by the Zahra family’s handyman.
11:07am The compilation of evidence against the 23-year-old Erin Tanti continues today.
Inspector Keith Arnoud and the defence council have appealed to the media to be sensitive in the way in which it reports the case.
