Gozo needs a large scale project to create economic momentum - Sant

Malta Independent Monday, 5 May 2014, 10:25 Last update: about 12 years ago

Having Gozo as a region would enable Gozitans to decide for themselves when, where and how new projects could be launched, former PM and PL MEP candidate Alfred Sant said during a visit to Gozo.

“Some form of regional status for Gozo could unblock decisions that were taking too long to be finalised. This was inhibiting new investment and the creation of jobs. For instance, it was quite clear that Gozo would benefit enormously from the building of a new yacht marina. The EU was still unwilling to recognize Gozo as a region.”

A theme that recurred in discussions during Dr Sant’s Gozo visit concerned the need for a new large scale project to be launched in Gozo in order to create economic momentum. During the tour, which covered Qala, Nadur, Xaghra, Marsalforn, Rabat, Sannat and Xewkija, Alfred Sant explained that together with his advisors, he was interested in obtaining up to date information about Gozo’s current state of development.  Later on in the coming week, based on the information acquired, he intended to write a personal letter to all Gozitan householders outlining his views on how Gozo’s economy could be given support by European institutions.
