L-Iskjav ta' Isabel

Malta Independent Tuesday, 6 May 2014, 21:02 Last update: about 13 years ago

Raymond has been cast into a mould ever since he was a child by all those around him. Others see him as a quiet, eccentric man with no friends except the village priest. He now inherits his grandmother’s old house, an event which attracts a mysterious woman into his life like an unexpected cold shower, a hypnotic fragrant breeze or a sudden debilitating electric shock. He had never anticipated or indeed wanted to change his life in any way.

This time however, Raymond defies his mother’s warnings and his father’s threats of hellfire if he dabbled in evil things. He willingly opens his door to mesmerising Isabel. Is she who she says she is? What does she really want? Why Raymond? These are questions that beg to be answered throughout the book. The two are an unlikely couple in their extreme difference from each other:  one manipulative and dangerous, the other naïve and trusting – perfect prey for a wily predator. One pities Raymond, fears for his sanity and safety while Isabel the witch is around, and yet, the fatal attraction proves to be a saving grace for the isolated man who celebrates a newfound aliveness, a joyful discovery that he too can love. It’s just too unfortunate that it has to be this woman who ignites the flame of life in his sad heart.

L-Iskjav ta’ Isabel is another quality book published by Horizons.
