Years ago, it was common to pass through villages in the evening, around Malta and Gozo and see entire families relaxing while enjoying a chat with their neighbors on the doorstep. Most of the time, children used to play traditional games, while their older brothers enjoyed a glass of wine and their parents stood gossiping about other neighbors.
Maybe things changed a bit and nowadays, instead of staying on the doorstep, the villagers meet in the main square and enjoy their cold drinks, ice-creams or meals. In few words one can conclude that the Maltese enjoy their evenings switching to a relaxing mode with some good food and wine.
To further enhance this year’s summer evenings, the Xaghra Historical Reenactment Organisation is presenting XAGHRATALE. This is a twenty-minute drama and dance show featuring the main historical highlights of the village of Xaghra.
Xaghra is rich in history which is still evident in the megalithic temples of Ggantija and other archeological sites, some of which still closed to the public. Xaghra remains the village of Calypso, the nymph which captured Ulyssis by her beauty and who remained enchanted on the island of Gozo for several years. Xaghra remained the village which attracts hundreds of tourists for its pictoresque panoramas, caves, Ramla Bay and for its lively square were seven bars and restaurants offer mouth-watering foods.
Xaghratale, with forty volunteers taking part, will surely bring more life to Xaghra during these summer months. The show will be held every Wednesday, starting as from Wednesday 9th July till the 27th of August. It starts at 9pm. The show will take the audience back in time, during the Neolithic age, the Great Siege on 1565, the plague and Second World War.
This show is free of charge and everyone is invited. The more people you bring with you, the merrier the evening will be!
