Dick Advocaat was introduced as Serbia's new football coach Monday and set his sights on qualifying for the 2016 European Championship.

The former Dutch and South Korea coach takes over a team that failed to qualify for this year's World Cup in Brazil.

"I have seen around 10 games, especially the last games, but I saw already what I need to know about the team," Advocaat said at a news conference. "Very talented players, but still not qualifying for the tournament and that is what we have to try to change."

Serbian football officials have said Advocaat's contract could be extended if Serbia qualifies for the Euros.

"We have only one target, and that is to qualify," Advocaat said. "That is the only option we have. (There are) no excuses when the quality is there. We have to show that we can do it."

Serbian Football Association chief Tomislav Karadzic said Advocaat was hired because of his experience in working with national teams.

"We believe that Advocaat's experience, knowledge and firm hand will help raise the game to another level," he said.

Advocaat succeeds Sinisa Mihajlovic, who switched to Sampdoria after failing in World Cup qualifying last year.

Advocaat has also coached the national teams of United Arab Emirates, Belgium and Russia, as well as clubs such as PSV Eindhoven and Rangers. Last season, he had a second stint with Dutch club AZ Alkmaar, which reached the Europa League quarterfinals.
