Game of Thrones star JJ Murphy has passed away aged 86 – four days after starting work on the hugely popular HBO show.

The Irish actor collapsed and died on Friday in Northern Ireland, where the forthcoming fifth season is currently being filmed.

JJ, whose previous film credits include Alan Parker’s celebrated biopic Angela’s Ashes, had recently been cast as Ser Denys Mallister – the oldest member of the Night’s Watch.

The actor reportedly told friends he was excited about the new role before starting work on the fantasy drama, which also stars Kit Harrington and Emilia Clarke.

The Belfast Telegraph report that it is unclear if the role will be recast by its American production team, who also have the option to order a complete rewrite.

JJ is also scheduled to appear in new film Dracula Untold, also filmed in Northern Ireland, in which he stars alongside Luke Evans, Samantha Barks and Charles Dance.

Away from the screen he had an esteemed reputation as a stage actor, where he cut his teeth with the Ulster Group Theatre School, where he learned his craft in 1948.

A member of actors trade union Equity, JJ had been a prominent fixture at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, where he worked alongside celebrated Irish actors Cieran Hinds and Liam Neeson.

His agent Philip Young paid tribute to the late actor following the news.

He said: 'I have never encountered a man with more spirit, passion and love for his craft.'

The actor starred in several other movies throughout his career including Mickybo and Me and Cal.

He is survived by his wife, Mary.
