The First Malta International Organ Festival, the brainchild of Joseph Lia, will be held between 28 August and 12 September. This two-week extravaganza festival of organ music will be a showcase of organ music and organ virtuosity by international and local organists.
Music lovers and concert-goers will have the opportunity to hear a wide variety of unique performances from some of the world’s leading organists in the remarkable acoustical space of several of Malta’s grandest churches, whose physical beauty will add to the magic of the moment. The organ will be heard in many forms, that is, as a soloist, as an accompanist, part of an ensemble and as basso continuo.

The organ is one of the most valuable musical instruments in the world. It works especially well with the excellent acoustics of the cathedrals and churches of the Maltese Islands, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. It leaves a great impression on listeners, enchanting and attracting musical connoisseurs from around the world.
The recently restored, historic organ of the Anglican Pro-Cathedral of St Paul in Valletta, will be played on the opening night by Wayne Marshall, a virtuoso organist and solo pianist and a renowned interpreter of Gershwin, Bernstein, Ellington and other 20th century American composers. Erwin Wiersinga (Holland) will be the next guest artist at the Anglican Cathedral. He is one of the most sought after organists in the world due to his virtuosity and musicianship. Other international guests include Vladimir Suzdalevich (Norway), Irina Rozanova (Russia), Vladimir Shliapnikov (Russia) and Gianluca Libertucci, one of Italy’s foremost organists, who currently plays at St Peter’s Basilica, Rome. The international artists will be residing at the Golden Tulip Vivaldi Hotel, from where they can appreciate the stunning views Malta can offer, and enjoy the beautiful Mediterranean Sea.

“The festival, sponsored by the Lions Club Sliema, will celebrate the rich heritage of Malta’s historic pipe-organs,” said the artistic director, Joseph Lia, Some of the world’s foremost organists will give audiences an opportunity to experience the beauty of an instrument which only comes alive when it is played. Churches across the island will resonate to the sounds of musical works old and new, putting an accent on Maltese composers as well as music from the organists’ native country not forgetting Bach and other mainstream organ compositions, as well as improvisations from the organists themselves.

Entrance to the concerts is free, but space is limited. Donations towards Fondazzjoni Nazareth will be collected during the event.
