Malta Independent Tuesday, 26 August 2014, 16:54 Last update: about 12 years ago

Incite Motion has had an exciting six years which have seen five students further their dance studies overseas and numerous more receive local and international scholarships and awards.

Last year, Leona Galea was accepted by the Kate Simmons vocational dance school for a three-year dance training course at professional level.

This summer, eight promising dance students – all recipients of awards or scholarships – attended courses overseas. Ten-year-old Martina Casolani won the Sharon Sapienza Award for the most promising student at Living Dance 2013 and attended a one-week international course at the Royal Academy of Dance in the UK, where she was taught by top faculty members. Her course included classical ballet, group dance, creative dance, hip hop and mask making, as well as a theatre trip to watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in London’s West End.

Other 2013 Living Dance winners included Jill Mallia, Emma Goodwin and Julia Agius, who were awarded a local scholarship by the Living Dance faculty to attend this year’s Living Dance.

Two senior students, Francesca Ellul – the recipient of the Lillian Attard Award by Incite Motion, and Leanne Muscat Drago, who was the recipient of the 2012 Living Dance Award, attended World Dance Movement in Bari where they were taught by top choreographers including Teddy Forance from So You Think You Can Dance and Shaping Sound. The dance convention included a performance in honour of Silvio Oddi, the famous dance partner of Lorella Cuccarini, who passed away recently. At the end of the performance, Francesca was awarded a scholarship to attend a course at the Kledi Dance Academy in Rome of which Kledi Kadiu, of Amici fame, is the artistic director.

Noelle Cauchi, recipient of the Sharon Sapienza Award from Incite Motion for being the most promising student in the senior school, has just returned from an intensive dance course at Bird College, one of the UK’s top performing arts colleges.

Diana Gauci was awarded a full Living Dance scholarship by Incite Motion as most promising student in the Middle School.

Other students who have been successful overseas include Nathaniel Ellul, who was awarded a three-year scholarship at Bird College; Sarah Vella, who furthered her dance studies at Laban; Mariele Zammit who won SFIDA; Lisa Mifsud who attended a Musical Theatre Course in Guilford and Valentina Azzopardi who is furthering her dance studies up to Master’s level in the UK.

The success of these students highlights Incite Motion’s dedication and constant drive to develop dance and dance education by providing a deeper insight to movement, and incite motion. The school, run by Astrid Gollcher and Christiane Borg Manché, endeavours to educate dancers through creativity, appreciation and performance, providing a holistic dance education and thus developing versatile, creative and individual dancers. Through quality professional training, they ensure that each student progresses steadily, as an individual artist, and develops as a performer. The number of students in each class is limited to ensure effective and personalised training.

Registration to enrol for dance classes at Incite Motion is open between Monday, 25 and Wednesday, 27 August between 5 and 7pm
