Malta’s Unifaun Theatre Productions taking the Edinburgh Fringe by Storm

Malta Independent Tuesday, 26 August 2014, 10:43 Last update: about 12 years ago

Unifaun Theatre Productions, one of Malta’s leading theatre companies in the area of challenging and quality theatre, are producing Philip Ridley’s Tender Napalm at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.  Having performed it over two runs in Malta at St James Cavalier Theatre in January/February and then again in July, the company run by Adrian and Sarah Buckle decided to take the show to Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival.  The same team was retained; that is director Toni Attard, Assistant Director Lizzie Eldridge, Choreographer Sandra Mifsud, Lighting Designer Chris Gatt, Set Designer Romualdo Moretti and actors Andre Agius and Bettina Paris.  The only change to take effect was that of Stage Manager where David Micallef stepped in for Stefan Scerri.

The production in Scotland took place at the C Nova Studio 1 venue in Victoria Street.

As with the runs in Malta, the audiences responded enthusiastically to the production, with some describing it as “the pick of the Fringe!”  Reviewers too responded favourably to the show.  The List described it as “a confident retelling of Ridley’s play”.  Broadway Baby said of the show:  “The production, by Malta’s Unifaun Theatre, is uniformly excellent. Actors Andre Agius and Bettina Paris are supremely talented; director Toni Attard and choreographer Sandra Mifsud deserve serious accolades for their work. Watching it is equal parts enthralling and uncomfortable, as it should be.”  Another reviewer from Box Dust gave the show a five-star review describing it as a "A breathtaking production revealing the violent back drop set against the relationship of two lovers. Upon entering the performance we witness the couple ardently kissing and feel almost as if we are intruding. The decision to use a thrust stage lay-out creates an intimate space and immediately a connection between the audience and the performers is made as we became immersed in their volatile world. Praise has to be given to the electric chemistry between the lead actors whose presentation of raw passion captivates audiences. Tender Napalm’s intensity is often relieved with bursts of playfulness which, at first, is uplifting but later proves harrowing as a darker undercurrent is revealed...A fearless and must-see production at this year's fringe."

Asked for comments, producer Adrian Buckle commented:  “We are obviously very happy with the reaction to our production here is Edinburgh.  We have put in a lot of hard work and the competition here is immense.  I have had people telling me time and time again that Maltese Theatre is no match for foreign Theatre.  I think that this time round we have proved them wrong as we are considered as one of the best acts in the Fringe.”
