Following its huge success at the recent edition of the Malta Arts Festival, Kelma Kelma u Nota Nota, the collaboration between the Facebook page Kelma Kelma and the Big Band Brothers, will be held again on 27 August 2014 at 9pm at Pjazza Teatru Rjal.
The performance, which brings together language, music, social media and personalities from popular literature, offers a unique experience, where characters from fables, songs and rhymes come to life for an evening of song, music, poetry and word play. The project is the result of a collaboration between the Big Band Brothers, made up of 18 musicians, and Kelma Kelma, the Facebook page about the beauty and possibilities of the Maltese language.
With the participation of Ray Calleja and the Bezzina siblings, the performance was first held on 15 July 2014 as part of the Malta Arts Festival. Its re-run is being organized through the initiative of Arts Council Malta, in collaboration with the Ministry for Justice, Culture and Local Government under the patronage of H.E. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, the President of Malta. All proceeds from the event will go towards the Community Chest Fund.
Administered by Dr Michael Spagnol, Kelma Kelma is a Facebook page about the beauty of the Maltese language. The page produces a steady stream of colourful memes which deal with several linguistic issues, such as the word of the day, proverbs, puns and wordplay, nursery rhymes, curious word origins, linguistic trivia, and the like. In its first year, the page has garnered over 30,000 likes and has an average total weekly reach of 80,000 users.
The Big Band Brothers is a musical outfit that has been around since 2006, the brain child of percussionist/singer Daniel Cauchi, today composed of a complete rhythm section, four trombones, four trumpets and five saxophones, similar to a traditional big band. The Big Band Brothers have so far taken their brand of live performance to Portugal, Sicily, England, Tunisia and Turkey. Since 2010, the Band has also produced its own concerts, namely three editions of A One Night Stand with the Big Band Brothers, and Ftakar, a Malta Arts Festival commission. Big Band Brothers have also featured in various events and productions namely the sold-out production Ospizio, Ghanafest2011, Discover University, 3D Event at San Lawrenz (in collaboration with Nafra Ensemble), ZiguZajg Kids and Youth Arts Festival Malta, and England’s Brouhaha Festival, amongst others. In 2011 the band also recorded and launched its first single Rain or Shine.
Tickets for the event are available from ticketline.com.mt or from the Embassy box office and from Pjazza Teatru Rjal in Valletta. Tickets cost €15 or €10 for students and senior citizens. Free entrance for children under 12 on presentation of a ticket. Each child must be accompanied by one paying adult. This event is a free seated event; seats are allocated on a first-come first-served basis
