Malta Independent Tuesday, 16 September 2014, 09:32 Last update: about 12 years ago

Three Maltese ladies have come together to present their art works in acrylic, oils and mixed media in a collective exhibition WE 3 at Ir-Razzett tal-Markiz Mallia Tabone in Mosta from 14 to 28 September. Meet the artists Monday to Friday 6 to 8pm while Saturdays, Sundays and Public holidays from 10am to 12noon and from 6 to 8pm.

Doriette Gauci Sciortino

Doriette Gauci Sciortino, the organiser of this exhibition, a self-taught artist who works primarily in oils, is best known both locally and abroad as an interpreter of marine art.

Over the years Doriette has perfected her own techniques and now feels confident in experimenting with people and depicting the emotions of the sea.  Waves are explosions of life and motion and Doriette interprets these elements in a way that make the paintings powerful and truthful. For an artist to translate waves into a piece of art, one requires conceptual and perceptual skills. Art academics argue that painting waves is one of the most challenging forms of artistry.

Doriette works on several pieces simultaneously. Regardless of which she chooses to work on, the sea is always the central and most prominent theme in her art.

She has organised various collective exhibitions, participated in a number of collective exhibitions and has had three solos.

Her oil painting Gozo Tranquility was chosen by Heritage Malta and The Tourism Authority for This is Malta campaign at Harrods in London.

Lina Treble

“I always had a secret wish to be able to paint,” Lina Treble explains. “Together with my sister I enrolled in a painting course, which I thoroughly enjoyed and as a result I felt confident enough to start painting more seriously and began to experiment with different styles, colours and techniques.

“Over the years, I have found that I am drawn to painting seascapes, landscapes and sunsets and enjoy painting these immensely. I also love experimenting with bold shapes, patterns and bright colours which I use in my abstract pieces. Most of my inspiration comes from the natural beauty and colours of Malta and Gozo.

“Over the years, I have taken part in several collective exhibitions around Malta and Gozo. In addition to these, I have been involved in two exhibitions with my younger brother, Fr Reggie Magri and sister, Grace Borg. Through these exhibitions I have been commissioned to paint a few pieces and I have work displayed in private homes in Dubai, London, Liverpool, Cambridgeshire, Yorkshire and Luxembourg.

“Painting is a passion of mine! Despite starting later in life, I enjoy developing and learning new skills and techniques and hope to continue painting for many more years to come.

Grace Borg

Grace Borg was born in Mosta. She has been a lover of art since childhood. While training to become a teacher at Mater Admirabilis Training College she also chose art as her special subject. Later on in life she acquired basic training in design by attending private tuition. Her artistic education consisted in Still Life, Cubism, Surrealism, Figure Drawing and Portraiture. As time went on she developed her own style painting abstracts and semi-abstracts incorporating copper and other materials as media. Her abstracts, executed in acrylics and oils, are alive with vibrant colours which she produces when creating her own palette. Portraiture, which she finds very challenging, is her favourite subject.

Grace has taken part in several collective exhibitions in Malta and Gozo. She also participated in two exhibitions together with her brother and sister at the Razzett Tal-Markiz Mallia Tabone in Mosta. Some of her works can be found in private collections locally as well as in London, Scotland, Luxembourg and France. She also does works on commission.

Grace always says that life without art will be monotonous.
