There’s nothing quite like a good workout to get your blood pumping, and energy rushing resulting in a high sense of self-esteem.

Joe Camilleri 35, the gym and spa manager has been a personal trainer for the past fifteen years. He undertook his CPD to advance from an instructor to a personal trainer and has been working at the db San Antonio Gym and Spa for the past seven years.
Joe, takes pride in helping people with special conditions, whilst also helping people lose weight, build up muscle and reach their ideal body type.
Prior to beginning my official workout, Joe evaluated my physical limitations, a test normally run on clients in order to assess their physical capabilities.
We began with some light stretching, push-ups, kettle-bell one armed raises (which involved lifting the kettle-bell with one arm off the floor, bringing it up to your shoulder and lifting above your head), as well as a few other exercises.
Following this, we walked over to the cardio section, where one could see numerous treadmills, a few elliptical machines and bikes, steppers and rowing machines. Given that this was my first time to the gym in over five months, he decided to let me off easy and warm up on the treadmill.
Exploring the vast selection of free weights and strength machines, one would find it hard to know where to start. Thankfully, Joe had a plan.
“Before moving onto free weights, if you’re not built enough, or have not frequented the gym, you should start with strength machines as they are easier to manage and to get used to lifting weights,” he explained.
From lateral pull-down machines, to vertical rows, leg curls and T-bar row machines, the gym is fully equipped for people of all strengths and sizes. All bars in the gym are up to Olympic standard, in order for people to train competitively, he said.
The gyms clientele include a large number of local members, he said, but are divided amongst all hours of the day resulting in the gym never being too packed.
The gym has several instructors, he said, each with an area of expertise.
Supplementation accompanies a good workout, and the db San Antonio Gym offers a variety of supplements to help with losing weight, gaining weight building muscles and others. Prices for supplements vary from €12 to €102.
A spa is also available on site, complete with hot stones or chocolate massages, mud chamber, body wraps, facials and much, much more. It’s a fully equipped spa, Joe explained. “We also have a deep tissue and sports massage, perfect to help athletes and gym-goes relax after a long hard workout”.
“We also cater for people with sports injuries, he explained. “Most of the time physicians would send us the required protocol for their patient, however if no, we each have our own field of expertise and put this to use in order to help the client”.
The gym and spa also offers a swimming course, with a high success rate. “We also offer a variety of classes including high-low aerobics, circuit training, Abs attack and more”.
The daily charge for using the gym is €6 or €12 if one would like to use the sauna and steam room. Monthly rates are around €50, including the sauna, Jacuzzi, indoor pool, shower room, steam room, free Wi-Fi and parking. The yearly membership plan costs €260 and includes all of the above.
