Safe and sound

Monday, 3 November 2014, 15:21 Last update: about 12 years ago

As Capital Cities' 'Safe and Sound' inaugurated the 2014 edition of the Maratona bir-Roti, participants were set to give their all to fulfil the message within the charity event's theme song. Friday the 14th of March marked the day that the students, school staff and members of the Association of Liċeo Past Students had been working towards.Their hard work would pay off, providing 74 schools all over Malta and Gozo with their own AED (Automated External Defibrillators). In keeping with the Marathon's theme of "Minn qalbna għal qalbkom" (from our heart to yours), AEDs are used to deal with Sudden Cardiac Arrest, a condition where the heart stops unexpectedly, depriving the brain and other vital organs of blood. Each passing minute reduces the affected person's chances of survival by 10%. Immediate help could spell life or death. It is this appreciation of how precious life is that pushed the Maratona bir-Roti team towards ensuring that students and staff in our schools would stand a better chance of surviving such unexpected peril. Fate, however, had crueller plans. As the 2014 edition of the Marathon was being planned, the big heart of one of the Liċeo's own students gave out. On Saturday the 23rd of November 2013, at just 15 years of age, Fifth Former Igor Scicluna suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away.Wanting to equip schools to prevent such tragedies, the Marathon went on to collect €130,900. Each benefitting school received an AED, as well as Basic Life Saving training for their members of staff and around 20,000 students. These were handed over during a ceremony hosted by the Liċeo on the 30th October in the presence of the Minister for Education, Evarist Bartolo, as well as Parliamentary Secretary Chris Aguis. The Marathon's 16th edition (launching on the 13th of March 2015) seeks to reach the remaining schools, while extending to all MCAST Institutes, University and registered voluntary sport, social, religious and cultural organisations which look after youths. These are invited to express their interest to Maratona Bir-Roti 2015,helping in its commitment to keeping students "safe and sound".
