The restored painting of Our Lady of Loreto is back in its place as the titular painting at the old church of Ghajnsielem following an extensive restoration project supported by Bank of Valletta.

Mikiel Busuttil's masterpiece was brought to the Ghajnsielem church by procession from Nadur on 9 September 1820 and remained there for almost two centuries. A restoration project undertaken by Ghajnsielem parish priest Fr Frankie Bajada saw the painting go through a two-year intervention project in order to restore it to its former glory.

The restoration process uncovered the artist's signature and date, as well as a previous intervention, most probably at the hands of Giuseppe Cali himself, because of the style which resembles that of a number of other paintings, also by Cali, found in the same church. The restoration also brought out the original vibrant colours as well as a number of hidden details that were otherwise lost to the naked eye.

The restoration of the titular painting is the first phase of the restoration process which is being supported by Bank of Valletta and which includes the restoration of a number of Cali paintings also present in the Ghajnsielem church.
