Continuous training for police officers, including on the use of guns, is something the police force is focussing on Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela said in Parliament today.
He was responding to a question posed by PN MP Jason Azzopardi. The Minister said that between June 2013 and September 2014, 23 District Officers underwent training for three days with regards to gun use. Between October and November this year, 188 officers underwent a four hour training session.
Answering a supplementary question by PN Whip David Agius, the Minister said he met with the Police Commissioner regarding this, and both agree that more training on a continuous basis is necessary. "When a policeman is training, he needs a replacement to fill in," the Minister emphasised.
The type of training will include both practical and theoretical training.
In a separate Parliamentary Question by PN MP Jason Azzopardi, saw the Minister say that 13 police officers over 56 years old have been reinstated since the last election. 75 in total have been reinstated.
