In a few hours, someone could become a millionaire.

The Super 5 jackpot tonight has a record prize of €1,500,000 prize, which could climb even higher as this depends on how much people play.

The Malta Independent took to the streets to ask what people intend to do if they are the lucky winners. Many were those who said they would think of those who are less fortunate. Parents thought of their children, and grandparents of their grandchildren. Travelling around the world and buying a new home were also popular choices.

One woman commented strongly against gambling, saying it is not clever to waste one’s money for such a small chance of winning. Others said they were simply not interested.

Among those who participate in the lottery, two of the people interviewed religiously try their luck every week and others take their chances only when the jackpot is high. Many are those who take the same five numbers each time, with the figures signifying birthdays, anniversaries or ages of their loved ones.

A report on The Malta Independent last week stated that various business owners believed that when the Super 5 reaches a high jackpot, people buy less daily necessities. One lawyer, Joe Mifsud, called for the introduction of the €1m cap to deter people from overspending at the expense of looking after their family.
