The Chamber of Engineers has expressed concern over the ongoing power interruptions affecting communities across Malta and Gozo, while urging a renewed focus on strengthening the long-term resilience of the country’s electricity infrastructure.
In a statement issued as widespread outages continue to disrupt households, businesses and essential services, the Chamber acknowledged the frustration experienced by the public and stressed that the incidents highlight the importance of ensuring critical infrastructure can withstand growing pressures.
According to the Chamber, recent extreme heat events, coupled with sustained growth in Malta’s resident population and tourism sector, have contributed to unprecedented levels of electricity demand. It warned that such conditions are likely to become increasingly common as climate patterns continue to evolve.
“Regardless of the specific causes, the events highlight the importance of designing and maintaining electricity infrastructure that remains resilient under increasingly demanding operating conditions,” the Chamber said.
The organisation noted that electricity networks are vital national assets and must continue to evolve in response to demographic changes, economic activity and the increasing likelihood of severe weather events.
The Chamber emphasised that modern engineering practices provide a range of tools and methodologies to support infrastructure resilience. These include predictive maintenance, asset condition monitoring, climate resilience assessments, digital modelling and the simulation of extreme events.
Such approaches, it said, allow engineers to identify vulnerabilities, anticipate system stresses and prioritise investments before failures occur, supporting evidence-based decision-making and ensuring infrastructure upgrades are aligned with long-term demand forecasts.
The Chamber also highlighted the importance of viewing major infrastructure incidents as opportunities for learning and improvement. It called for an evidence-based technical review of the recent disruptions once the immediate situation has stabilised.
A comprehensive assessment, it argued, would help identify lessons learned, evaluate how the system performed under extreme operating conditions and inform future resilience measures. Sharing relevant technical findings with stakeholders would also help strengthen public confidence and support continuous improvement across the sector.
The Chamber praised the engineers, technicians and operational teams currently working to restore electricity services, describing their efforts as essential during periods of exceptional demand and system stress.
“Their professionalism, expertise and commitment are essential to maintaining critical infrastructure during periods of exceptional demand and unforeseen system stress,” the statement said.
Looking ahead, the Chamber stressed that infrastructure investment, planning and asset renewal must keep pace with Malta’s continued growth and future needs. It argued that delivering resilient infrastructure requires long-term strategic planning, sound engineering principles and sustained investment guided by technical evidence and whole-life asset management.
The Chamber of Engineers said it remains available to support national authorities, infrastructure operators and policymakers through independent expertise and constructive collaboration aimed at improving the resilience, reliability and sustainability of Malta’s electricity infrastructure in the years ahead.
