A number of the country’s institutions still need to win the people’s confidence, and 2015 should be utilised to recover the prestige of these institutions, President Marie Louis Coleiro Preca said today.

Without mentioning what these institutions are but clearly referring mostly to the police, she said that the contribution of all the stakeholders is needed for this confidence to be attained. “The responsibility is collective - of the workers, both civil and in uniform, as well as that of their superiors and of politicians.”

In her message for Christmas and the New Year, she spoke about the horrendous events that have taken place around the world during the year, saying that the “protocol of silence” in front of such violence is immoral.

She condemned without any reservations all attacks against life and human dignity, domestic violence, cyber attacks and violence in the streets.

Turning the Malta, she noted that the two sides of the House of Representatives this year worked together to enact laws for the benefit of Maltese society. She noted a dynamic civil society, the strengthening of civil rights, the growing economy, the expansion of social services and the help given to the lower sections of society.

The four major events that were celebrated this year served to reflect on what made us Maltese, she said, adding that the historic happenings are collective heritage. The correct analysis of the past is indispensable for the maturity of the people in a democratic context, she said. 2015 should help further this line of thinking.

She said she was pleased to note the publication of a strategic policy to combat poverty and social exclusion. The coming year should serve to continue this battle, she said.

Dr Coleiro Preca highlighted the importance of a strong education system and urged better care of the environment. She called for more unity among the people, more debate and possibly more agreement between politicians, especially in areas that affected the people the most.

She ended her address by encouraging generosity during the Strina fund-raising event to be held on Friday.
