Government launches public consultation on renewed tourism policy document; vision to reach 2030

Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis today launched the much-awaited public consultation tied to the revised edition of the tourism policy draft document for the Maltese islands in the presence of various tourism industry stakeholders.

Dr Zammit Lewis said that the government's vision will cover the period 2015 to 2020 but the policy is also based on wider vision reaching 2030.

Speaking during the launch at the tourism ministry in Valletta, he said that it is vital everybody contributes to such a consultative document, be it politicians, industry stakeholders and last but not least members of the public.

He said that he will be taking on board all suggestions before implementing the policy. Dr Zammit Lewis said that the policy is to be launched by March.

The policy is based on three pillars, he added, that of accessibility, quality and marketing of the local product.

Dr Zammit Lewis emphasised that today is an important day for the industry. He said that tourism numbers are doing well however pointed out that there is more room for improvement.

He also referred to the Central Bank of Malta study which stated that the new height limitations of buildings will lead to a number of hotels benefitting from additional beds, a total 1,200, and will also lead to further economic growth.

The policy speaks of our air connectivity and quality assurance, among other issues.
