Alfred Mizzi Foundation awards bursary for Mediterranean studies

Monday, 12 January 2015, 15:20 Last update: about 11 years ago

Derek Vella, on behalf of The Alfred Mizzi Foundation, presented a cheque of €1,000 to Tamsin Marie Kingswell who won an essay competition for the bursary for the M.A. in Mediterranean Studies. The Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof Dominic Fenech, thanked The Alfred Mizzi Foundation for their support and augured that other entities follow this example in supporting initiatives by the University of Malta. For his part, Mr Vella expressed his and the Foundation's satisfaction at being associated with an important endeavour such as the Faculty of Arts M.A. in Mediterranean Studies. The presentation was held in the Faculty of Arts Library. Tamsin Marie Kingswell is 21 years old and graduated in December 2014 in History and Archaeology. Having completed her undergraduate studies, she felt a desire to enhance her knowledge and sharpen her skills through a taught M.A. programme. The M.A. in Mediterranean Studies fitted the bill in that it offered a programme which was focused but at the same time varied, approaching the Mediterranean from a range of angles. In her own words: "I decided to enrol for the Masters in Mediterranean Studies to gain better perspective on an area that I have been studying about since secondary school. Many of the departments in the Faculty of Arts are taking part in this Masters which was why I thought that I would get to observe the Mediterranean from many different angles. In writing the essay for the bursary competition I had to question my previously-held notions about this area and sea. I realised that while I had studied its history and archaeology, I had not given much thought to the Mediterranean itself. My essay revolved around the fact that there is no one single definition to explain what the Mediterranean is, which makes it all the more fascinating. And as I progress in my course of studies I look forward to grapple even further with the questions raised here."
