Hidden aspects of Gozo by Fr Joseph Bezzina

The series of public lectures at the head office of Din l-Art Helwa resumes on Thursday, 15 January with a fascinating talk by Fr Joseph Bezzina. This is the first talk in Din l-Art Ħelwa's Jubilee Year and is entitled Hidden aspects of Gozo.  Fr Bezzina will project an overview of the history of the island of Gozo, from the first arrival of humans to recent times, with an emphasis on the least known type-sites. It will include a glimpse at the recent discoveries in and around the Gozo Citadel: the Mystery Circle, the Roman Walls and the 1701 bridge.Fr Bezzina, born in Victoria, Gozo studied at the University of Malta and the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome. He holds three history degrees, including a First-class Honours Doctorate in Church History, and has also received the Pope's Award, his University's highest honour, after placing first in the 1982 finals. He was for many years head of the Department of Church History at the University of Malta and senior lecturer in history in the Faculty of Theology at the same University and at the Sacred Heart Seminary, Gozo. He is the assistant national archivist of Malta and head at its Gozo Section which he founded in 1989. He has written over 40 books, including a history of Malta during the early British period: Religion and Politics in a Crown Colony, The Gozo-Malta Story, 1798-1864; a history of the Church in Malta from the apostolic era to recent times: Storja tal-Knisja f'Malta and a short history of Gozo: Gozo's Government, the autonomy of an island through history. Fr Bezzina is the author of a number of studies published in English, Maltese, French, German and Italian.The talk will be delivered on Thursday, 15 January at Din l-Art Ħelwa, 133, Melita Street, Valletta, at 6.30pm.
