The publication 'The Academic Colorista - Paul Camilleri Cauchi' gives the artist the artistic literary recognition he deserves. Its 192 pages record the personal ascendance into the Maltese artistic field and introduce the reader into the vicissitudes of the artist's life with particular reference to his visual academic art production which is still alive and kicking. The collective effort of the parties involved especially by the author, Dr Aaron Attard-Hili, and the photographer, Daniel Cilia, renders a lucid, imaginative and well researched volume with their reassurance input which put Paul in the carved out artistic niche he deserves. The publication discursive contents together with the pictorial production and its layout, also by Cilia, pays off. What follows here are case studies of the several artistic episodes of Paul supplanted with personal anecdotes which make the particular art piece a living organism of its own. Each account is rich in its own particularities and signals the fascinating figure of Paul with a whole brilliant career in the several media of his artistic production. The richly illustrated book, it turns out, is not merely a form of showcasing of ideas about devotion towards arts in the several genres. It is integral to the way in which Paul's artistic activities come to understand themselves and to find their respective admirers. Once the deeply researched script joined with pictures, the dialogue form turns into the multi-voiced portal. The script is inspired by the personal experience of the author with the artist multi-faceted life over a period of fourteen years. Paul is an engaging 'raconteur' and there are many anecdotes which were respectively intertwined along the accounts as published in the volume. Were Paul's works to be published, it would take up a number of volumes. Nevertheless the publication is able to give a picture of the man, quote his diaries and letters, and assess his work which was aptly exploited with Cilia's camera. The author sets the scene by recounting Paul's background and relating such matters as his fondness for design control, the interplay of colours, his patrons, temperament and character. The material of the volume is mainly dispersed in three chapters. The first chapter deals principally with the life and early works of Paul. The second chapter concerns mainly with Paul's ecclesiastical art production as found on church vaults which forms the central bone of his artistic development while the third chapter provides a cursory look to the several genre of sketches, studies and paintings commissioned for the private as well as religious entities.The beautifully produced 31x24 cm volume with richly multi-valent interplay is published by the Salesians Publications and edited by Fr Charles Cini SDB assisted by Tiziana Castillo.
