The percentage of elderly persons in Malta is much higher that  in 1910, Labour MP Deo Debattista, during his adjournment speech in Parliament said.

He highlighted the need to focus on helping the elderly live within the community rather than in old peoples homes, stating that care from a distance can be utilized.

He argued that a portion of the elderly only went home at night to sleep, adding that it would be better for the elderly to live in studio flats within the community. He stressed that this could be cheaper than having to provide further old peoples homes and could be more comfortable for patients.

The MP also mentioned the need for people having the option to work beyond the age of 65.
