Din l-Art Ħelwa brings sustainable power and lighting solution to Għallis Tower

Monday, 19 January 2015, 15:11 Last update: about 13 years ago

A project to illuminate Għallis Tower, one of the De Redin Towers built in 1658, was recently completed by Din L-Art Ħelwa through the sponsorship and support of Solar Solutions Ltd and Brighter Solutions Ltd. Since the tower is off-grid (ie, it does not have an electricity supply) it was decided to adopt a 100 per cent sustainable solution. Solar panels on the roof, which are not visible from the outside, harness solar energy that is then stored in batteries and used at night. This was also made possible by using an efficient LED lighting system both for outside illumination and internal lighting. The down-lighting, as opposed to the more common up-lighting, not only minimises the light pollution but also enabled Din l-Art Ħelwa to complete the installation with minimal impact on the tower and its surroundings. Din l-Art Ħelwa holds Għallis Tower in guardianship and hopes that this initiative will further embellish the coast road at night and increase the enjoyment of this historic monument as an iconic landmark.
