The first signs of spring have sprung, as Is-Simar Nature Reserve celebrates the hatching of two Little Grebe chicks. Two pairs of Little Grebes, (Blongun zghir in Maltese), have been incubating their respective eggs over the New Year period and last week the two eggs successfully hatched. The chicks have already been spotted exploring their new wetland habitat, not straying too far from their parents' side.The nature reserve in Xemxija is the only place on the Maltese Islands where these birds successfully breed, with the last chicks being born in 2011. This year's arrivals are the earliest ever recorded in Malta and are considered extremely early breeders for Europe in general. The reserve is open on Sundays from 10.30am to 4.30pm for anyone wishing to come and spot the new arrivals. Entrance is free of charge. :
