Party at new oncology centre set to create division among hospital staff

A party to be held this evening at the new Oncology Centre at Mater Dei Hospital is set to create division among hospital – simply because not all doctors and nurses are invited.

Only those who work in the surgical theatres have received an invitation to attend the event, held to celebrate the targets reached in terms of number of surgical interventions that have been carried out.

The targets were reached after extra hours were worked, even on Sundays, for the backlog in elective surgery to be cut down.

But other doctors and nurses feel they are getting the short stick.

Hospital staff who work “in wards and in corridors” have contacted The Malta Independent to point out that even they are carrying out sterling duties at the hospital, probably under more duress and in more uncomfortable situations, and “yet nobody has invited us to a party to celebrate.”

The invitations have been issued by the hospital administration.

What is irking staff who work in wards and corridors is that their efforts are not being appreciated by the management.

One other point they raised is that the oncology centre, which has cost millions of European and public money, should not be turned into an entertainment venue.
