Social Dialogue Minister Helena Dalli participated in a conference organised by the Royal Academy of Science International Trust (RASIT) and the United Nations in New York.

The Minister spoke about the need for more work and commitment on women's health issues, especially where violence against women and domestic violence are involved.

During her opening speech, the Minister said that "this forum is occurring during a significant moment, when the world is taking account of the millennium development goals and the discussions surrounding the sustainable development goals".

She stressed that actions addressing domestic violence and violence against women must continue to be a priority for every country. "Laws are not enough and there is need to strengthen the relevant structures for enforcement. There is always need for more education, stressing that violence is never the solution."

The Minister discussed the Sustainable Development goals that are to be adopted by the UN and the need for ambitious yet realistic goals in the interest of women, where health is concerned.
