Enemalta plc is inviting the public to an open weekend at the Marsa Power Station to learn about the history and technology of the electricity generation plants that have been in operation for the last 61 years.

On 14 and 15 March, Enemalta workers will welcome visitors to guided tours of the 1953 Marsa Power Station, which is expected to be fully decommissioned soon. Guests will be able to learn about this power station's development, walk through the different areas and watch related audiovisual productions. A number of vintage photos from Enemalta's archives will also be exhibited. Weather permitting, the power station also provides a unique vantage point to enjoy views of Grand Harbour.

Entrance to this event is free of charge. Guided walks start every half hour on Saturday 14 March between 9am and 2pm and on Sunday 15 March between 9am and 4.30pm. As this is an industrial environment, visitors should wear suitable clothing and footwear.

While touring the power station, visitors can also participate in the Marsa Power Station Photography Competition. €500 worth of photographic equipment vouchers will be awarded for the best photos submitted. Competition rules are available on www.enemalta.com.mt. This initiative is being held in collaboration with the Malta Institute of Professional Photographers.    

At the beginning of 2014, in accordance with the policy direction given by the Ministry for Energy and Health, Enemalta began planning the decommissioning and dismantling of the Marsa Power Station. The company decommissioned the older parts in the summer of the same year and immediately coordinated the necessary work to start dismantling them. Some of the decommissioned units were still in use until 2013. The decommissioning and dismantling of the power station will continue in several stages.
