Retail sales increased by 5.2% in February over the corresponding month in 2014 the government said today, quoting the EU’s statistics agency.
Malta registered the second highest among all EU member states. The growth registered in Malta was twice the eurozone average, the government said.
The increase in shop sales was the highest since 2010. February was the fourth consecutive month where increase in retail sales was reported by the Eurostat.
The agency’s figures are consistent with the results of a European Commission survey carried out among retailers and consumers, which showed that Maltese consumers are optimistic and are spending much more than before as a result of their improved financial position, the government claimed.
The survey also showed that the confidence of retailers is increasing and that they are forecasting increased sales. This has led foreign analysts to revise Malta’s economic forecasts upwards.
“The increase in retail sales is another reflection of the government’s successful economic policies.” It said the record levels of job creation and investment were a result of the economic environment created through the reduction of burdens and the fight against inflation. People are working more, earning more and spending more.
