Next Sunday, 26 April, Wirt iż-Żejtun will be organising a heritage trail around the centre of Żejtun. The tour will start off with an overview of the urban development of this town through different ages, as well as the history of a number of important buildings located within the square.
It will then proceed towards the Gwiedi area and Triq Santa Katarina, along which route participants will discover the splendour of local domestic Baroque architecture hidden away in the narrow and winding streets of the town centre. The neo-classical Government Primary School, and next to it, one of the first schools ever built in Malta dating back to the early 19th Century, will also be viewed.
The trail also includes a visit to the Beland Band Club and its Music Archives, both of which are located within an architectural gem of a building. A guided tour of the most important paintings inside the Baroque Parish Church of St Catherine follows, during which visit participants will also be taken around the altarpieces by local artist and paintings restorer, Anthony Spagnol. Mr Spagnol will also be giving a tour of the recently refurbished Parish Arts and History Museum.
The tour will then proceed across the main square to the Pandora Theatre, a local cinema which was built in the 1950s and which nowadays forms part of the Zejtun Band Club premises. The tour ends towards noon back at the point from where it started.
