PN parliamentary group approves proposals on organ donation issues

The Nationalist Party has led an internal consultation process, which at times involved primary stakeholders, which discussed the government document on organ and tissue donation.

At the last parliamentary group meeting, a PN statement said, a number of proposals were approved. The party will however remain open to a wider discussion on such a delicate and ethical issue.

The PN is proposing that the country must legislate for the present system to move from a situation where relatives of an organ donor not recognised at law can change his or her wishes, to one in which the person’s wishes are fully respected.

This situation respects the free choice of the individual after his death, the PN said.

The PN also proposes that the age of consent for organ donation is reduces from 18 to 16 years. Young people are being given more responsibilities at age 16, and the PN believed that they should be given the possibility to register as donors too.

The party is proposing that if a person does not register as an organ donor but is known to have expressed the wish to donate organs, the family should still be given the opportunity to donate the deceased person’s organs.

The party suggests an extensive information campaign and an easy process for persons to register as donors.
