A court has ordered the extradition of a Dutch man - described in a website as an online gambling "rockstar" - wanted in connection with multiple rape charges of a minor, the crimes allegedly having taken place between 2005 and 2013.

Initially, Martijin Ramsis Waalboer, 42, was issued a European Arrest Warrant and found to be staying in Malta. He stands charged with breaching a position of trust.

The accused asked the court to release him from custody or at least be placed under house arrest instead of being remanded in custody until he is extradited, especially due to the fact that his son is 21 years old and is living with him in Malta. He said he was ready to go to the police station every day to sign the police book. However, the magistrate explained that in cases of extraditions, Maltese law prohibits the granting of bail.

Quoting the law, she said that once a person gives his or her consent to be extradited, the accused is kept in custody until the accused is returned. Therefore the magistrate could not accede to his request and remanded him in custody.

For more than a decade, Waalboer has been one of the leading affiliates in poker and gaming in The Netherlands.

Legal aid Abigail Bugeja represented the accused. Police Inspector Mario Cuschieri prosecuted.
