FLUX: an exhibition by young Maltese contemporary artists

Monday, 25 May 2015, 14:34 Last update: about 10 years ago

The title of this exhibition, FLUX, transcends throughout the artists works which incorporate: the current, fearless, opinionated, direct, uncompromising, challenging, dissected, transition, explored, change, innovative philosophy that shapes the works and ongoing research of three young Maltese contemporary artists.

The FLUX exhibition artists were selected for their unique, individual ideologies and their creative use of media within their artworks. The exhibition is being curated by British artist, Michelle Morrissey (MA). Morrissey has had a wide exposure to the fine art world, working in the UK for a large arts organization. She has worked on projects and exhibitions with renowned artist such as Jeremy Deller, Mike Nelson, Antony Gormley and Tracey Emin. Her skills within the arts are now focused within her new Contemporary Art Space, Studio 104, which, is set in the heart of Valletta. Studio 104, Fine Art Space aims to promote contemporary art in the capital city.

The three, Young Maltese Contemporary Artists (or YMCA's) Darren Tanti, Victor Agius and Elisa Von Brockdorff have a unique and original style or signature and represent current topics that are progressively in flux.

Darren Tanti's realism echoes the influence of religion, alongside, consumerism with a dash of politics. Each artwork visualizes these narratives in both subtle and direct ways, the artworks exudes youth, a young opinion, playful boldness and a masterful execution of academic skills.

Elisa Von Brockdorff has developed a strong observational and challenging oeuvre within her photographic work. Colour is a paramount entity within her compositions as she highlights the multiple and references nature as the ultimate design starting point in her artwork.

Victor Agius' creative practice observes the daily changes and movement within the land. Nature is his workshop. For the FLUX exhibition we are treated to exquisite, compositions from an artist who has an absolute connection and respect for the land, fresh vibrant artworks that ooze, with hints of the eternal, prehistoric and spiritual. Agius has with the earth, what Pollock had with paint!

All of the YMCA's are at a pinnacle moment in their artistic careers, they have gained academic qualifications, both locally and abroad. They have exhibited in Europe and in the USA and are now setting the standards for local contemporary art. Flux represents the ongoing change or development within the artwork and the inclusivity of a wide range of media. The artists exhibited in the FLUX exhibition instinctively challenge and use change as a natural progression of the original artwork.

The Flux exhibition is an ongoing project. During the exhibition, new artworks will be added by the exhibiting artists, which will allow visitors to Studio 104, to follow the Flux artists individual art practice and visual journeys. Also during Flux exhibition, a series of both art related and wider topical program of events will be launched within this contemporary art space and the Flux exhibition. All updates and program details will be posted on: Studio 104 Valletta facebook page.
