‘Malta for all’ has turned into ‘Malta for them only,’ Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil said this morning.

Speaking on Radju Malta, Dr Busuttil said corruption has become institutionalised with a large number of irregularities having been carried out with the blessing of the government. These include the €13,000-a-month appointment given to Konrad Mizzi’s wife. The Opposition, he said, will not be intimidated by the government. On the contrary, it has a responsibility to uncover the scandals and the institutionalised corruption that exists, for the sake of transparency and clean politics.

Dr Busuttil also referred to the Old Mint Street scandal when the presenter, Andrew Azzopardi, noted asked why many people, himself included, were being reminded about the 80s. “This is because the obscenities that are happening now are the same as those of the 80s.” Corruption with the blessing of the government never took place under PN adminsitrations.

He also spoke about the government’s plans to build a university in Zonqor, insisting that the site was chosen in secret and parts of it belong to private individuals. “This means that some people will become rich off our backs.” The PL, he said, was turning some people into millionaires just because it owes them.

The Opposition Leader also spoke about the tension that has gripped Parliament in the past few weeks – a consequence of the “behaviour unbecoming of government MPs.” It is scandalous how government MPs resort to attacks on the Opposition or insults whenever they are asked something. The Speaker had to suspend two sittings in the space of two weeks because of such behaviour.

Dr Busuttil said the first thing he would do as Prime Minister would be to revise the Ministerial code of ethics, making sure that it raised the standards. Joseph Muscat has recently raised these standards in his revised code of ethics.

He also insisted that people were not reaping the benefits of economic growth. Some people, like Marco Gaffarena have been made millionaires while the rest of the people have been given 58 cents a week.”

The PN Leader also announced that the party will be launching a set of proposals to “clean up” politics in Malta. “I want people to know where they stand with me on transparency and meritocracy,” he said
