A 48-year-old construction worker was remanded in custody on Wednesday in relation to domestic violence charges, including causing his ex-partner fear that violence would be used against her, voluntarily causing slight bodily harm, and misusing electronic communications equipment to threaten to commit a crime.
On 9 October 2026, a woman lodged a report at the Domestic Violence Unit against her ex-partner following a jealousy-fuelled argument that allegedly escalated into a physical assault.
The court heard how the victim had returned home from work when the accused confronted her after noticing men liking her Facebook posts, demanding to know who was messaging her.
The argument turned violent when the man attempted to snatch her mobile phone, grabbed her by the neck, and shoved her, causing both of them to fall onto the bed.
He then allegedly punched her in the chin. The couple have three minor children together.
The victim suffered minor injuries and complications before seeking assistance at the Domestic Violence Hub.
A risk assessment subsequently evaluated her situation at a score of 17, placing her in the 'severe danger' category.
The accused entered a guilty plea.
After confiding in his lawyers, both parties agreed that a one year jail term, suspended for two years would suffice. The court accepted such request, and also issued a protection order and restraining order in favour of the victim, permitting the accused to contact his ex-partner solely regarding their children.
Inspector Colin Sheldon led the prosecution, while lawyers Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri represented the accused.
Lawyer Alessandro Farrugia appeared as parte civile.
