The Nationalist Party has reiterated its stand against abortion after a member of its youth setion said the service should be available to those who need it.

18-year-old Jamie Vella shared his personal views in a Facebook post.

In a statement issued this morning, the PN said that its position on abortion was and remains clear – it is against the procedure. “The fact that an MZPN member has a personal opinion which differs than the PN’s position on the matter does not mean that the party’s position has changed. The same MZPN member has made it clear that he was expressing his personal views and that he understands that this is not in line with the party’s position on the subject of abortion.” The PN said it would not be “punishing” Mr Vella for sharing his personal view.

In a statement this morning, Gift of Life said one's personal opinions were always respected, however, when a member of the party’s youth stated that that the killing of unborn babies should be allowed by law, the public have an urgent right to know whether the Nationalist Party's position had indeed changed on the matter of legal abortion.

"Mr Vella, is quoted to have said that he " is confident that his opinion will be tolerated". Mr Vella fails to see the monstrous contradiction in this statement. given that abortion kills a human being, and thus, removes from that same individual, their very own right to have an opinion on their very own future. Is this not also the most intolerant of attitudes towards a more vulnerable member of our kind? Does the Nationalist Party agree with this? Mr Jamie Vella is quoted as having said that abortion should be available to “those who need it”. He goes on to compare abortion to other unrelated issues, such as 'Civil Unions' Does the Nationalist Party agree with this? Does the nationalist party consider abortion to be a right?

Mr Vella goes on to state"“In the last two years, I have seen the PN transform into a more accepting party towards people with certain differing opinions – such as myself – while maintaining its core values. We warn the public of this very familiar veiled attempt at manipulating the defining and true meaning of core values as it is understood by sincere persons.
The most important value, is the absolute value of each human life from conception. Does the party still hold this value as a core value? The Gift of Life Foundation express the concerns of the many thousand pro-life Maltese who need to know that their values are truly represented."
