Prime Minister Joseph Muscat this morning said that the Maltese public should not be concerned about being directly impacted by the financial situation in Greece, because Maltese banks are not exposed to banks in the troubled country.

Speaking briefly on One Radio, Dr Muscat said that it was irresponsible for the Greek Prime Minister to decide to hold a referendum on 5 July, without discussing the matter at the Summit, which ended on Friday.

The public is being asked to decide whether to accept a bailout deal offered by international creditors. If Greece decides to refuse the financial package, it will be deciding to exit the Eurozone.

The five days prior to the referendum will be crucial for Greece and humanitarian measures might be expected. Dr Muscat said that between Friday and Saturday, over a quarter of a billion euros were withdrawn from banks in Greece.

The moment Greece consults with other markets, Malta, among other countries will start putting pressure to get back the money transferred to Greece.
