Cases of abuse of elderly people St Vincent de Paul are being investigated, Parliamentary Questions answered by Social Solidarity Michael Farrugia have revealed.

The Minister stressed that every case of abuse is investigated as needed. He mentioned that in such a large entity such as St Vincent de Paul problems are bound to crop up; however he never held back from ordering inquiries.

The Parliamentary Questions were asked by Jason Azzopardi, Paula Mifsud Bonnici and Claudette Buttigieg.

The Minister said that there are cases which are referred to the police rather than an inquiry being held. He explained the gravity of situations in which an elderly person would be abused by someone with responsibility.

The Minister would not give the number of cases being investigated, arguing that he prefers to be correct.

He argued that the laws being introduced by government always show that government looks at the interest for the elderly.

He spoke of a case that is currently being investigated where the person will be taken before the public commission for possible dismissal and hoped the Opposition would not defend that person.

Turning to the case revealed last Sunday, of an elderly person who died and was buried without his family being told, the Minister said that all procedure was followed and a report has been made to the police to investigate.
