Following the Government’s announcement that discussions with potential developers of a 70,000 square metre shooting range in Busbesija, Mosta have been terminated, the proponents of a nationwide appeal to safeguard the neighbouring Jesuit-run Mount St Joseph retreat house’s mission have issued a statement of thanks to all those who offered help and support during the past two months.

“We would like to thank the local media - newspapers, radio, tv and online news portals - which gave extensive coverage to the issues concerning the proposed shooting range, and who were so instrumental in getting our appeal to preserve Mount St Joseph's mission across to the general public. 

"Our thanks go to all the professionals - architects, engineers, lawyers, health and safety experts, environmental scientists and so many others - who came forward and offered their time and expertise in researching all issues and preparing ways forward should the need have arisen,” Fr Patrick Magro Sj, Jesuit Provincial, said.

“We greatly appreciate the awareness created by the Front Harsien ODZ and other environmental groups and lobbyists, as well as the statement issued by the Interdiocesan Commission for the Environment. Jesuits will continue to work for eco-justice in Malta as they do worldwide,” he added.

“There were thousands who called, messaged or spread the word supporting our appeals. There were so many prayers for the preservation of this apostolic work. Our appeal to preserve the silent atmosphere offered by Mount St Joseph retreat house was made on behalf of all those who have used the house or will use it at some point in their lives - the house and the support individuals find there have been instrumental to bettering the lives of so many.

"We would like to thank those who wrote in the papers to support the cause, shared our online posts, signed the petition.

"The Government’s decision to turn down the shooting range project was based on financial reasons, however our appeal nonetheless had a very positive impact. We were all in this together and among the most special outcomes were the sense of solidarity, the strength to stand up and defend what we believe in, and the renewed appreciation of the precious role Mount St Joseph plays in Maltese society.”
