Monday, 13 July 2015, 18:42 Last update: about 12 years ago

Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi says he cannot public contracts between Enemalta and Electrogas because it would be unfair to Enemalta.

The Minister was answering a flurry of Parliamentary questions relating to the Enemalta, by MPs Mario De Marco, Marthese Portelli, Anthony Agius Decelis and Claudio Grech.

Minister Mizzi said that it would be unfair for commercial matters to be revealed, however stated he was not against publishing the agreements in principle. The Minister said that Enemalta has a Board of Directors, with 4 directors appointed by Enemalta and 2 by Shanghai Electric. A Board of Management also exists. He said that the SHanghai Electric members do not have a say on electricity purchases. He mentioned that the security of supply has yet to be signed and is awaiting EU approval. He mentioned that indications look positive.

Turning to the gas pipeline, he said the route is close to being settled.

The Minister also announced that PN Leader Simon Busuttil will be meeting with Shanghai Electric while on his trip in China, about projects within Europe relating to wind energy.

Dr Mizzi stressed that electricity theft has reduced by a third, and said that cases have been passed on to the police and there is a 'pipeline of activity'. He was responding to questions as to why only 25 of 600 alleged energy thiefs were moved before the courts.

The Minister also mentioned that government cannot guarantee no power cuts in Sliema this Summer, however mentioned that works are ongoing on three new distribution centres which would hopefully solve the problem.
