The U.S. Ambassador Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley is no wilting flower and seems to have boundless energy. Her sociability and organising skills are a credit to her and her country. She seems to respond to most invitations - and they must be many - including ones on 'fun' programmes on television. She must be the most recognisable ambassador in Malta.
So on 1 July I drove to Ta'Qali with a friend to respond to her invitation and that of her daughter Kara, to celebrate America's Independence. There she was, impeccably dressed in a red shift, with her daughter, welcoming Maltese officials, diplomatic colleagues and friends.... many friends. I forgot to ask how many invitations were sent.
It is never difficult to park in Ta'Qali and this is always a joyous celebration with bunting, music, several bars. The theme this year was "Discover America," with an emphasis on accessible tourism for people with disabilities. Who else but H.E. would engage a sign interpreter so that those present with a hearing disability could follow the speeches. I have been to many a reception but have never encountered this before.
In brief remarks on the occasion, Ambassador Abercrombie-Winstanley invited guests to discover America's boundless attractions through its diverse culinary traditions that celebrate delicious food, authentic character and timeless appeal. These words immediately took me back to my visit to New Orleans a couple of years ago. Every meal we had whether in a posh restaurant or more frequently to some small place we came across as we were walking around, was excellent. In New York too, whether it is breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner the food is always innovative and on the whole truly divine. And that is just two cities.
At Ta'Qali there was also an exhibition of photographs which showcased the exciting variety of American landscapes, wildlife and people.
To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Ambassador Abercrombie-Winstanley stressed the importance of inclusive, accessible tourism. She said, "Tourism is a vital economic factor in the United States and in Malta. We cannot afford to neglect the great positive impact that inclusive, accessible tourism can have on this sector." This is so true of course. How many persons, young and old, can be seen in a wheelchair in the streets of Sliema and Valletta for a start? And those having to use a wheelchair is one type of disability. What about the blind? I always ask myself: I hope these brave people are not finding it difficult to get to see the places which interest them.
Then the Ambassador expressed satisfaction for the excellent bilateral relations between the United States and Malta. She thanked the American companies operating in Malta for their support and annual commitment to sponsoring the Independence Day reception. Few embassy receptions are held without sponsorship these days.
The Ambassador's Combo, the U.S. Air Force in Europe band, performed popular jazz and rock tunes. A member of the U.S. Embassy staff told me all about this high-energy music ensemble specializing in jazz and rock. On 30 June "The Ambassador's Combo" performed at Palazzo de Piro entertaining jazz and rock enthusiasts.
Their song-list covers the complete spectrum of American popular commercial music. Formed in 1976, the Combo has thrilled millions, performing throughout Europe, Scandinavia, Africa and southwest Asia providing troop support and community outreach in public concerts, festivals, and at embassy and military functions. Their extensive touring schedule reaches out musically and geographically to bring the sound of America to service members and civilian audiences overseas. The Combo represents the cutting edge and the golden past of American popular music and its Air Force.
It is a 5-member component of the Jazz band consisting of drums, bass, keys, vocals and an audio engineer. "They have the ability to perform in a variety of large and intimate settings such as schools, hospitals, DV events, and other intimate music environments as well as larger shows. The combo is versatile for both acoustic and electric performances, specializing in everything from high energy rock/pop/jazz to low key impromptu collaboration with local artists and clinics with aspiring young musicians," I was told.
Some including Her Excellency, were tempted to the dance floor. The evening was mercifully cool which added to the pleasure of being outdoors on a starry night.
In her speech, The President of Malta expressed appreciation and satisfaction for the bilateral successes of the past year and for the commitment of the U.S. and Maltese governments to continued cooperation in meeting today's global challenges. Her Excellency Coleiro Preca and the Honorable George Vella, Minister of Foreign Affairs, joined Ambassador Abercrombie-Winstanley, Embassy staff, and guests in toasting the historic friendship between the United States and Malta.
There were several bars but no food stations this year. However, waitresses were constantly coming out with huge trays of canapés and other finger food. I am not one who particularly enjoys hamburgers but I have to admit to helping myself to two that evening, as they were delicious. Maybe I have now been converted to them after all.
