Nationalist MP Kristy Debono this evening said that the government needs to explain all it knew about Accenture plc and its involvement in the agreement between Malta and Shanghai Electric.
Technology outsourcing and consultancy company Accenture plc announced this week that it has helped Shanghai Electric Power Co. Ltd in its initial expansion into the European energy market, which included investments in the power-generating market in Malta as part of its globalisation efforts.
She said that the Opposition got to know more about the company during a meeting that Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil had in China last week. She said that the government never gave the impression that there was some sort of brokerage between the government and the company.
Mrs Debono questioned why Energy Minister Konrad Minister failed to speak about the details of the agreement. “Does the Minister know how much Accenture was paid and by who?”
It seems, she said, that for a number of weeks the government has been consulting with Accenture yet decided to divulge any information. She asked whether Accenture will be directly involved in ARMS or whether it is a client of Accenture which will be.
“ The Minister needs to properly explain to us MPs and the general public on how Accenture will be involved with ARMS Ltd – who ultimately send out utility tariffs bill.
“ The stakes are too high,” she concluded.
