Gozitan local councils concerned over disruptions in recyclable waste collection service

Thursday, 23 July 2015, 10:24 Last update: about 12 years ago

A number of local councils from the 14 based in Gozo are having serious concerns about the imminent interruption of the recyclable waste collection service being offered by one of the operators. Last week, a contractor for this particular operator informed these local councils that it will stop offering its services in the coming days should the operator not pay its long overdue bills.

Waste collection schemes are responsible to collect material for recycling on a weekly basis (the green or grey bags every Tuesday) as well as from bring-in sites and monthly door-to-door glass collection.

In the event that this waste fails to be collected, this will generate an inconvenience for the residents and a significant amount of littering - definitely not a good sight to be seen by Gozitans, Maltese and tourists alike especially during the peak summer months.

In view of these developments, the four localities which are serviced by the other operator, GreenPak Cooperative Society, are being assured of uninterrupted service.

GreenPak CEO Ing. Mario Schembri said: "The localities served by GreenPak, namely Victoria, Xewkija, Sannat and Xagħra, will not be affected at all. GreenPak has always honoured its dues on time. Therefore, these four localities and their respective residents can have the peace of mind in terms of an uninterrupted recyclable waste collection service."
