Nursing: a fulfilling career

Monday, 27 July 2015, 12:56 Last update: about 10 years ago

Do you want a satisfying career that has a profound positive impact on peoples' lives?  If your answer is yes then this is your chance to fulfil or even exceed your ambitions in nursing.

Nursing is more than just a job. It's a rewarding career with a huge range of opportunities for anyone with the passion to make a difference in the lives of others. Nursing offers opportunities for you to work with people of all ages, from a range of backgrounds, in areas such as preventative primary health, acute or chronic conditions. No two days as a nurse are the same due to the variety and flexibility available to you in this career path.

Never has there been a more appropriate time for you to consider a professional career in nursing as now as MCAST and the University of Malta (UoM) have now joined forces to provide you with more opportunities.  An agreement has been reached between MCAST and the University of Malta, which allows you to start your educational path in Nursing at MCAST, and then complete it at the UoM.

The UoM will now start accepting graduates of the MCAST Level 4 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (Health Studies) to follow either of the following two options. Either entry into the one-year Preparatory Course leading to the UoM's two-year Higher Diploma Programme in Nursing, which leads to the role of State Registered Nurse (SRN) or entry into the UoM's B.Sc. (Hons.) Programme in Nursing, provided that such applicants would have also obtained an MCAST Level 5 Award in Life Sciences (that is provided by MCAST in the second year of the above mentioned two-year Health Studies Diploma). This also leads to the role of State Registered Nurse (SRN). These programmes provide the theoretical knowledge and practical experience needed to work as a State Registered Nurse.

Since the MCAST Extended Diploma is at MQF Level 4, there will be no need for the SEC (Secondary Education Certificate) certification in English Language, Maltese and Mathematics (MQF Level 3).
This agreement, which comes into effect from this September's intake, opens the door for hundreds of students to further specialise their skills at the University in the field of nursing, while avoiding replication of courses.

Dr Alex Rizzo, Director of the Institute of Applied Sciences stated "This will provide students with an ideal blend of both theoretical and practical knowledge and skills that the nursing profession requires. Nursing is in very high demand in Malta and in Europe, and provides for a profession that is challenging, fulfilling, and very stable.  Registered nurses find that their profession is immensely rewarding, and allows them to contribute significantly to the health and well-being of their fellow citizens".

Dr. Silvio  De Bono, President of the Board of Governors, said that this is a very important milestone whereby students from MCAST attending Level 4 and Level 5 in Health Sciences can now opt to either pursue their degree at MCAST or else move on to carry out a degree in Nursing at the University of Malta. This agreement, had also opened doors for other potential agreements in other fields of study. MCAST, through its University College will also continue in its mission in offering degree programmes in different fields,  complementing those offered by the University of Malta.

Mr Stephen Cachia, Principal and CEO mentioned that next week, the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) will be receiving applications from new students for its full-time courses beginning in October.
