Maltese roots band Etnika has regrouped to present its first local performance in eight years.

The show, dubbed 'Footnotes', features a more compact and back-to-basics set-up, where members could express a more profound sentiment and work on a fresh sound, free from effects and fanfare, whilst maintaining its original aim of the creative use of traditional and popular melodies and musical instruments.

The local concerts are to be held on 21 and 22 August within the intimate setting of the Blue Box theatre, Masquerade Theatre Arts School, Oscar Zammit Street, Msida - showcasing a refreshed repertoire of Etnika's best songs and demonstrating a more contemporary and thoughtful approach, yet infusing the music with the energy and excitement which had become a signatory trademark of the band's concerts.

The new Etnika is a heartfelt footnote, a passionate and sincere musical investigation, the unwritten text between the lines, a new story waiting to be told. Always an unlikely mix of artists and characters, now in this reduced swix-piece band the quirkiness of the setup becomes acute: oud and biambo, fifra (Maltese cane flute) and flamenco footwork, double bass and Maltese lullabies. Expect a few detours, expect the unexpected, this port-cabaret band has a big heart.
